SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major plot details and spoilers for ‘Drishyam 3‘. If you have not watched the film yet and wish to avoid spoilers, please stop reading now.Movies built on suspense always face a major challenge: keeping the audience surprised. This challenge becomes even more difficult when the previous films are considered modern classics.
‘Drishyam 3’ is trying hard to continue the legacy created by the first two parts, but this time the familiar formula no longer holds the same excitement. The original films worked because viewers never knew Georgekutty’s next move. However, by Part III, the audience already understands the style and pacing of the series, making many of the twists feel predictable rather than shocking.
Jeethu Joseph He returns to familiar ground with Georgekutty once again
Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film once again follows Georgekutty, played by Mohanlal. He now lives in peace, produces films, and searches for a groom for his eldest daughter.
But the past, as usual, refuses to leave his family alone. While the plot seems interesting at first glance, the first part of the film drags on for too long, revisiting familiar emotions and scenarios that viewers have encountered before. The film takes a long time to reach its climax, stretching itself in many areas. Although Jeethu Joseph tries hard to create suspense after the interval, it does not succeed as much as the other two films in making an impact.
The meta references and twists are fun to watch, but not very impactfulAnother interesting thing about the film is its self-awareness. It is interesting how Georgekutty created his own film called ‘Drishyam’ by claiming it to be a remake. There are also some clever observations that only the hardcore audience can understand, like the one about the protagonist who looks like Ajay Devgn from the Hindi version of the film. This adds a breath of fresh air to the narrative.
However, the problem still lies in the lack of originality in the storytelling process.
Because of this familiarity, many of the twists no longer create the same tension or emotional payoff that made previous films so memorable.
Mohanlal remains strong, but Drishyam 3 seems unnecessary
Despite the film’s flaws, Mohanlal once again delivers a compelling and nuanced performance as Georgekutty. His screen presence and emotional restraint continue to hold the film together. The climax tries to surprise the viewers, and a few moments still manage to arouse curiosity. However, the film feels too long, at approximately two hours and thirty-seven minutes. Ultimately, “Drishyam 3” feels less like an engaging sequel and more like a series trying to outdo its own legacy.
The first two films remained in front of the audience at every step. This time, the audience seems to be one step ahead of the film itself.
