'I never felt like an outsider': Aishwarya Rai Bachchan recalls the early days of Tamil cinema, Cannes 2026

Before becoming one of the biggest stars of Indian cinema, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan left an unforgettable mark on Tamil cinema with films like ‘Iruvar’ and ‘Jeans’. Even as a newcomer, she quickly impressed audiences with her screen presence, beauty and performing skills.

A new interview of the actress is now going viral on social media, where she looks back fondly on her initial days in the Tamil film industry. Aishwarya shared how she was warmly welcomed by the cast and crew during the time when she was still learning the language and understanding the industry. Aishwarya Rai has never felt like an outsider in Tamil cinema

Talking about her experience during the film ‘Jeans’ with The Indian Express, Aishwarya said that the team made her feel completely comfortable from day one.

“The nice thing about it is that I didn’t feel out of place. I didn’t feel like a girl from Bombay who had come here at any point in time,” she said. The actress added that the love and support she received gave her the confidence to perform difficult scenes and long dialogue takes in Tamil.

“At no time did I feel like a newcomer,” she recalled. “I was constantly excited and exuded a lot of confidence.” Her comments reflected the strong bond she shared with the team and how the environment helped her grow as an actor early in her career.

Released in 1998, ‘Jeans’ was a huge commercial success and was also one of the most expensive Indian films made at that time.

The film later became India’s official entry to the Academy Awards, increasing Aishwarya’s popularity across the country.
