Twisha Sharma case live updates: Husband Samarth Singh detained after surrender attempt fails; Madhya Pradesh HC orders fresh autopsy

Live updates on Twisha Sharma case: Bhopal Police on Friday arrested Samarth Singh, the fugitive husband of former actress Twisha Sharma, whose death earlier this month sparked allegations of dowry harassment by her family. These developments came as the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered a second autopsy to be conducted by a team of experts at AIIMS Delhi and the state government handed over the investigation to the CBI.

The 32-year-old actress was found dead at her home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Her family alleged that she was harassed and ill-treated over her demand for dowry.

Singh, a lawyer, had earlier withdrawn his anticipatory bail plea from the Supreme Court. Later in the evening, he appeared before a local court in Jabalpur in an attempt to surrender. However, the court did not allow his surrender, following which a Bhopal Police team detained him and left for Bhopal, according to his lawyer.

During the hearing, Supreme Court Justice AK Singh noted that the police have the right to interrogate the accused for 24 hours before submitting him to a competent court either for judicial or police custody.

The Bar Council of India has also suspended Singh’s license to practice law with immediate effect.

Supreme Court orders autopsy for second time

The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Friday ordered a second post-mortem examination to be conducted at AIIMS Bhopal in the presence of expert doctors from Delhi.

Justice Singh passed the order while hearing an urgent petition filed by the Sharma family earlier in the day.

The accused’s lawyer, Mrigendra Singh, told the court that they had no objection to a second autopsy being conducted, but said their “only concern” was that “the names of the AIIMS doctors in Bhopal, who are very good, will be tarnished”.

The court explained that ordering a second autopsy should not be seen as calling into question the previous examination.

It is also held that by directing a second post-mortem examination, neither this court nor the petitioner directly or indirectly attributed any wrong motive or cast any doubt on the earlier post-mortem report or on any person but the death of the deceased occurred within six months of the marriage, therefore, the judge said: “A second post-mortem examination must be conducted to remove all doubts from any quarter.”

The court also asked the director of AIIMS New Delhi to form a team of experts who can travel to Bhopal as soon as possible on a special flight arranged by the state government to conduct the examination.

The family seeks a new achievement

Advocate Anurag Shrivastava, representing the Sharma family, said the petition was filed in the morning and the court acted quickly.

“We filed an urgent writ petition at 10:30 am and the court directed AIIMS Bhopal to conduct the second autopsy as soon as possible. Expert doctors will travel from Delhi to conduct the examination,” he said.

Shrivastava added that the family had also challenged the interim bail granted to Singh’s mother, a retired judge and consumer forum president, known as Giripala Singh. He added: “The court issued a memorandum, and the matter will be considered on Monday.”

The MP government hands over the investigation to the CBI

Earlier in the day, the Madhya Pradesh government recommended a CBI investigation into the case. The state home department has issued a notification transferring the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.

The case, registered at Katara Hills police station, involves charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, 2023, and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

The decision came two days after the Sharma family met Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

Sharma’s father welcomed the second autopsy order and the CBI probe, and said the family wants complete transparency in the investigation.

“We want a post-mortem video and a clear report so that justice can be done for my daughter. Her husband was a legal advisor to the Madhya Pradesh government and under these circumstances, how can one expect an impartial investigation? He and his mother are using their influence to suppress the matter,” he said.
