The Election Commission on Friday announced that elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats will be held on June 18 after the retirement of incumbents, including former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Digvijay Singh.

The EC said in a statement that elections for Rajya Sabha seats will be held in 10 states where office holders are retiring on various dates starting from June 21 to July 19.

Rajya Sabha elections will be held on four seats each in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka, three seats each in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, two seats in Jharkhand and one seat each in Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.

The deadline for submitting nominations is June 8.

Those retiring from the Rajya Sabha include Gowda, Congress leader Kharg (both from Karnataka), union ministers Ravneet Singh (Rajasthan) and George Kurian (Madhya Pradesh), former chief minister Digvijay Singh, Congress leader Shaktisinhji Govil among others.

The EC also announced by-elections for one seat each in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

In Maharashtra, the assembly seat fell vacant after Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar resigned from the seat, who has since been elected to the state assembly.
