In 2002, cave scientists found a hidden skeleton revealing an ancient Australian predator

The experience of being on the Nullarbor Plain in South Australia is one of entering another world. The area is known for its stark terrain, where there are hardly any trees at all and the harsh desert sun breaks down anything organic within a few weeks.

But beneath the feet of the unsuspecting traveler are limestone caves that tell a very different story. In 2002, a group of dedicated cave explorers were scanning this desolate landscape for hidden underground openings when they squeezed through a narrow crevice and fell onto the completely undisturbed cave floor. Shining their headlamps into the pitch black, they expected to find ordinary rocks or seasonal deposits.Instead, the beams of light from their torches revealed the almost perfect skeleton lying quietly in the dust. It soon became clear that the skeleton possessed some unique features, including an exceptionally strong structure and terrifyingly advanced jaws. By complete chance, researchers discovered the bones of a marsupial lion, which became extinct on Earth tens of thousands of years ago and was considered an absolute predator.

The underground chambers contain vast expanses of unimaginably deep timeThe exceptional condition of the bones immediately caught the attention of geologists, because organic structures do not usually last long on the surface. This is according to an important geological study entitled The antiquity of Nullarbor speleothems and their implications for karst paleoclimate archives. It is noted here that the geological past of the area is responsible for the formation of an extremely dry and stable underground ecosystem with absolutely no air movement and little water penetration.

The outside world, suffering from climatic and weather changes along with erosion, is completely cut off from this environment.

Using the latest methods for dating surrounding minerals, the researchers found that these caves had not been touched at all for more than four million years. Such astonishing geological stability is what allowed the delicate fossil skeleton of an ancient creature to remain completely exposed on barren ground, without turning into a pile of dust or being dislodged by scavengers.Uncover the habitat of a long-extinct predatorThis discovery gave biologists a unique opportunity to study the continent’s extinct ecosystems. As stated in a paper entitled Arid middle Pleistocene vertebrate fauna adapted to south-central AustraliaIn the scientific journal Nature, the discovery proved to be much more than just an interesting anomaly. The study details how the unique cave system managed to preserve entire communities of extinct megafauna, including several previously unknown species of giant kangaroos.

By analyzing the beautifully preserved skeleton of the marsupial lion found within this ecosystem, researchers were able to definitively study its bone density, predatory bite force, and climbing mechanics.Indeed, these underground caves stand as visible testimony today, reminding us that the Earth has managed to keep the memory of itself hidden in the strangest of places. Although we stare at these seemingly deserted terrains and take them for granted in their lack of life, there is a whole world of mystery lying beneath their feet.

They show that all it takes is a little curiosity to unlock amazing stories from bygone eras. It’s a truly astonishing thought to think that while people today spent decades riding their cars down the highway on empty land, the remains of a terrifying prehistoric creature were still beneath them.
