A viral post on social media about the struggle of an H-1B employee laid off from Meta has drawn criticism and people are celebrating as an Indian lost his job in the US.
A woman’s post about an Indian engineer who lost his job in the recent layoffs has gone viral in Meta, with many people celebrating that there will now be three less Indians in the US and the man may have to pack his bags with his wife and child from the US.
However, the post, if not fake, had a strong indication that the man was in Bengaluru, India, as he said the downtime Meta mail arrived in his inbox at 11pm Indian time.“His wife is in H-4. His child is in third grade in Seattle. He has 8 months left on his apartment lease in Bellevue. His H-1B clock is just starting to tick — 60 days. Meta stock soared on the news. Zuck described it as becoming more efficient. This is what AI transformation actually looks like for the 2,000,000 Indians abroad.”
The post written by X user Shveta said: The impact of AI on Indians abroad is the highest.
30 year plan on 3 year visa: Strong reactions on social media
While the post was meant to harp on the devastating impact Meta employees had when they received the layoff mail, social media users celebrated Indian losing his job and questioned why there was such a complicated plan in the US when he was only on a work visa.“It is strange that he bought an apartment on H1B knowing that he could be kicked out of the USA at any time.
Honestly, H1B is a temporary visa but people are now thinking because it is equivalent to a green card. Strange!” one wrote. One user described this story as a sad story, and opined that H-1B visa holders must believe they are one email away from disaster. “The NRIs had the option of moving to Canada, getting permanent residency and then settling down, but they decided to stay in the US for a higher wage. They chose this risk knowing full well the downsides of the event,” the user wrote.Another wrote: “Luckily for them, foreign workers have a home to return to, but Americans don’t. That’s just the way it is. A temporary visa is a gamble they took on purpose for their families.”“That means at least three fewer Indians,” one of them celebrated.
