The Cockroach Janata Party was started as a mockery after CJI Surya Kant’s remarks comparing some youth to “cockroaches”.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a meme-driven satirical movement launched just four days ago, on Wednesday claimed to have crossed 10.1 million followers on Instagram, surpassing the BJP’s 8.7 million followers on the platform.

The development marks a new chapter in the era of India’s internet politics, as a parody party born out of online outrage suddenly competes with the country’s most dominant political machine on the social media arena.

The party celebrated this achievement with a triumphant statement: “It only took 4 days. Never underestimate the power of youth.”

Founder Abhijit Debaki also criticized the BJP’s long-standing “world’s biggest party” branding, posting on X: “They said it was the world’s biggest party.”

From sarcasm to social media phenomenon

The Cockroach Janta Party came into being after controversial remarks attributed to Chief Justice Surya Kant, in which he compared some unemployed youth to “cockroaches” and “parasites”, sparking widespread online backlash.

What started as a ridiculous online reaction quickly turned into a full-blown viral movement.

The party describes itself as “the voice of the lazy and the unemployed” and is openly cynical. But beneath this humor lies a sharp criticism of unemployment, institutional elitism, political privilege, and youth frustration.

Its statement includes demands such as:

  • There are no Rajya Sabha seats after the retirement of the Chief Justice
  • Take strict action against deleting valid votes
  • An electoral ban on dissident MPs
  • Take action against misinformation spread by the media
  • Greater representation of women in governance

The movement quickly gained traction across Instagram, X and meme pages, especially among younger users who embraced the party’s politically conscious humor and anti-establishment tone.

Why is he obsessed with the internet?

Unlike traditional political campaigns centered around rallies and television appearances, the Cockcrouch Janta Party operates almost entirely through Internet culture.

Its content mixes revolutionary-style posters, exaggerated political rhetoric, absurd memes and Gen Z humor. Supporters jokingly identify themselves as “survivors” of unemployment, inflation, competitive exams and relentless societal pressures.

The movement’s explosive growth reflects a broader shift in how young Indians engage in politics online. Instead of formal ideological mobilization, digital native users increasingly channel frustration through communities of ridicule, satire, and memes.

This allowed the Janta Cockroach Party to achieve something remarkable: to turn the joke into a participatory political subculture.

The party’s rise has also attracted participation from mainstream politicians, with Trinamool Congress MPs Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad previously reacting to the movement online.

The BJP still dominates real-world politics

Despite its historic feat on Instagram, the BJP remains the strongest political organization in India electorally and organisationally.

The party recently asserted its dominance in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 seats while the Trinamool Congress managed to muster only 80 seats.
