Valta poll live replay: West Bengal’s Valta assembly constituency goes to the polls today after the Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered a fresh poll for the seat, citing “subversion of the democratic process”. Falta went to the polls for the first time on April 29 during the second phase of the elections, but the Electoral Commission canceled the vote for this seat after allegations of serious irregularities.

The Independent Electoral Commission ordered fresh polling at all 285 polling stations in the Valta Assembly constituency, after re-polling at 15 booths in the Paschim Magrat and Diamond Harbor Assembly constituencies. The votes will be counted on May 24.

Polling in Valta today The most important points

1. The Election Commission has significantly strengthened security arrangements for the voting process on Thursday. According to a senior election official quoted by PTI, eight Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel will now guard each polling station, double the number deployed during the April 29 polls.

2. Just a day before the re-poll, Trinamool Congress candidate Jehangir Khan withdrew from the contest.

3. On Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari led a roadshow in Valta ahead of the repoll and made a series of promises to voters.

4. Adhikari said that one family member of every BJP worker allegedly affected by post-election violence after the 2021 Assembly elections will be provided jobs.

5. BJP candidate Dibangshu Panda expressed confidence before the re-poll and predicted a landslide victory for his party.

Why did the European Commission request another survey?

The EC’s decision came in the wake of a detailed report submitted by Special Observer Sujit Mishra after reviewing CCTV footage from polling stations across the constituency.

According to the report, many polling stations lost video footage or showed serious procedural violations during voting.

Falta repo live: EC doubles security arrangements for Falta repo in West Bengal

Valta poll live replay: The Election Commission has almost doubled security arrangements for the May 21 re-poll in West Bengal’s Valta assembly constituency which was canceled last month due to allegations of widespread tampering in the electronic voting machine, a senior poll commission official said on Wednesday.

According to an official of the state Chief Electoral Officer, eight Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel, equivalent to an entire division, will be deployed at each polling station.

He added that during the April 29 poll that was eventually cancelled, there were only four people, or half a section, stationed at each booth.

“The poll panel does not want to leave any room for irregularities this time. Therefore, security arrangements have been greatly enhanced,” a poll panel official told PTI.
