“Rick and Morty” is headed toward a feature film as Warner Bros. is developing an animated film based on the hit Adult Swim series. Jacob Hare, the show’s longtime director, is in talks to direct the project.

The film is still in the early development stage, and the studio has not revealed any details about the story yet. The move comes as the Emmy Award-winning series prepares for its ninth season and continues its journey with renewals until the twelfth season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jacob Hare is in talks to direct a “Rick and Morty” movie for Warner Bros. Hair has directed episodes of the Adult Swim series since 2019 and now serves as the show’s supervising director.

InSneider first reported his involvement.Series co-creator Dan Harmon also confirmed Heer’s role during a short interview with CinemaBlend on Tuesday. Harmon said the team did not look outside the show for a director. “Jacob Hare is the director. We didn’t do any shopping,” he said.The animated film does not have a release date yet. Harmon and Justin Roiland co-created “Rick and Morty,” which premiered in 2013. The show has won Emmys and ranked as the most-watched comedy staple over recent seasons. A spinoff titled “President Curtis,” featuring Keith David in the lead role, is also scheduled to debut soon on Adult Swim.In 2023, Adult Swim severed ties with Roiland following felony domestic violence charges, which were later dismissed. Roiland voiced both Rick and Morty before the roles were recast.Harmon previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he discussed the film version with Warner Bros. executives. And he felt hopeful about it. “My philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, spend a bunch of extra money on it and make it 90 minutes,” he said.He added: “Not trying to get iconic status thanks to key dramatic twists or anything like that, but rather to make it a really great episode of Rick and Morty.”Harmon also said that Zack Snyder once offered to help get the film started. Snyder later appeared as himself in the eighth season of the series.
