The single-engine Cessna 172 plane went down in the field near the airport on Monday, May 18, 2026. While the pilot was forced to change course, and the plane was attempting to land, the certified flight instructor, said to be in his 20s, was unable to escape the wreckage despite being taken to nearby Westerly Hospital, according to the New York Post. “That was the loudest bang I’ve ever heard in my life. I thought something fell off a truck,” Kerry Vacca, a nearby resident, told WPRI.
The accident is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
