With a picturesque backdrop of Italian streets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posed for pictures with his ‘girlfriend’ and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after arriving in Rome on the last leg of his five-nation tour.

Prime Minister Modi and Meloni, whose close friendship sparks ‘Melodi’ online posts, have once again grabbed the attention of social media with their interactions and pictures together. “Upon landing in Rome, I had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Meloni over dinner followed by a visit to the famous Colosseum. We exchanged views on a wide range of topics.”

“We look forward to our talks today, where we will continue the conversation on how to strengthen Indo-Italian friendship,” Prime Minister Modi said in a post on X, where he shared photos with his Italian counterpart.

The Colosseum is an oval-shaped amphitheater in central Rome. It is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Italy on Tuesday and received a warm welcome from Italian Prime Minister Meloni, with whom he is scheduled to hold talks on Wednesday. “Welcome to Rome, my friend!” Meloni said on X.

The two leaders last met in November 2025, on the sidelines of the G20, and held a bilateral meeting.

Prime Minister Modi’s time in Italy

On his arrival in Rome, Prime Minister Modi received a warm and energetic welcome from the vibrant Indian community in Italy, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a social media post.

Jaiswal said the Prime Minister witnessed colorful performances including Kathak, Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam performances by Italian artists.

“The reception also included a soulful performance of Indian classical music by Italian musicians. The mesmerizing display of santoor, tabla, bansuri and sitar showcased the richness of Indian musical heritage,” the spokesperson said.

In another post, Prime Minister Modi shared details of his interaction with Italian painter Giampaolo Tomasetti, who presented his works to him in Varanasi. “Tomasetti’s passion for Indian culture goes back more than four decades,” he said.

“In the 1980s, he started as an illustrator of books related to Vedic culture. From 2008 to 2013, he worked on 23 large paintings related to the Mahabharat,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also noted that Indian music is very popular in Italy.

“During the community welcome in Rome last evening, five Italian artistes performed Hamsadhwani. Tribute to Mr. Valerio Bruni (centaur), Mr. Leo Vertoni (sitar), Mr. Simone Mattello (bansori), Mr. Francesco Gherardi (tabla) and Mr. Niccolò Melucci (bansori),” Modi said in another post.

“Friendly and positive exchange, with a shared commitment to strengthening the partnership between Italy and India in the coming years,” Meloni wrote at the time with the hashtag “Melody”.

Several times in the past, the duo has taken photos and videos together and shared them online using the viral hashtag, showing that they enjoy the buzz that each of their encounters creates.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Rome after visiting the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden and Norway as part of his whirlwind five-nation tour.
