Sarah Gonzalez asks how Indians and people of Indian descent in the United States have such beautiful homes.
Texas journalist and whistleblower Sarah Gonzalez, who has been investigating alleged H-1B fraud in her state, said all her surprise visits to the homes of Indians and people of Indian descent revealed one thing: They all had nice homes.
Gonzalez said she made these unannounced visits to people’s private properties only because their office addresses had no one to answer her questions, but they all lived in nice homes and some were even in gated communities. Gonzalez blamed Joe Biden’s administration for giving out home loans to non-permanent residents like H-1B visa holders, and said American citizens who don’t defraud the system can’t live in nice $800,000 homes.
Gonzalez said it was enough that the United States allowed H-1B visa holders to come to the United States and make money; They should not be allowed to obtain a loan.In 2025, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development decided to ban non-permanent US residents from obtaining mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration. In making the decision, HUD noted that the Trump administration “reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the economic opportunities of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents while ensuring that federal benefits, including access to FHA-insured home loans, are reserved for individuals with lawful permanent resident status.”
“Non-permanent residents are now subject to immigration laws that “could impact their ability to legally remain in the country” — which could de facto impact their ability to repay an FHA-insured mortgage. “The ability to meet long-term financial obligations depends on stable residence and employment,” HUD stated.
Do H-1B visa holders get mortgages in the United States?
Even after HUD’s policy change, H-1B visa holders can obtain mortgages in the United States. The policy change is for an FHA loan, an FHA-insured mortgage, designed primarily to help first-time or low-income homebuyers more easily qualify for a home loan. It has a lower down payment and easier credit requirements. But H-1Bs can get traditional loans, jumbo loans, and private bank loans. Most H-1B holders go for conventional loans because their salaries are high.
