On Monday, the US military command in Africa carried out additional kinetic strikes against ISIS in northeastern Nigeria.According to Reuters news agency, the operation was carried out in coordination with the Nigerian government.“U.S. Africa Command, in coordination with the government of Nigeria, conducted additional kinetic strikes against ISIS in northeastern Nigeria. Intelligence confirmed that the targets were ISIS militants. Full assessments are ongoing. No damage was caused to U.S. or Nigerian forces,” Africa Command’s Public Affairs Command said in a statement.
“Eliminating these terrorists reduces the group’s ability to plan attacks that threaten the safety and security of the United States and our partners.
She added that AFRICOM remains committed to leveraging specialized American capabilities to support our partners to overcome common security threats.This comes days after the killing of Abu Bilal Al-Minuki, the second-in-command of ISIS, in a joint operation carried out by American and Nigerian forces.US President Donald Trump said in a statement that the operation was carried out under his direction and included what he called a “meticulously planned and highly complex mission” by US and Nigerian forces.
“Tonight, at my direction, courageous American forces and the Nigerian Armed Forces flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and highly complex mission to eliminate the world’s most active terrorists from the battlefield,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.He said that the ISIS leader was tracked through intelligence sources despite his attempt to hide in Africa. Trump added that Al-Minuki played a role in planning operations targeting Americans and destabilizing parts of Africa, adding that his killing would greatly weaken the global ISIS network.
