The feat came during the Punjab Kings IPL 2026 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
Before Iyer, only MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma reached the 100-match mark as captains in the Indian Premier League. The 31-year-old has captained three teams in the league – Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings.Iyer became captain of Delhi Capitals for the first time in 2018 and led the team in 41 matches. Under his leadership, Delhi reached its first Indian Premier League final in 2020.He later moved to KKR and captained the team in 29 matches between 2022 and 2024.
In 2024, he led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title. His stint with Punjab Kings has already led to a final appearance, in IPL 2025, making Iyer the only captain in IPL history to lead three different teams to the final of the tournament. Before Sunday’s match, Iyer had a record of 56 victories as captain, including two Super Over victories, and 40 defeats. Three matches ended without a result. His win rate in completed matches stands at 58.3 percent, which is on par with Dhoni for the best success rate among the IPL captains.
The record adds another chapter to Iyer’s leadership journey across various franchises and teams in the IPL.In the match, Punjab Kings (PBKS) decided to play first against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).After winning the toss, PBKS skipper Iyer said, “We will bowl. I don’t follow statistics; we see clearly how matches go. If we bat and bowl well, the toss doesn’t matter. I didn’t know it was my 100th match as captain, but I will be happy if we win.”
We bowled great, but we need to enjoy the pressure. Brar and Loki come.”PBKS made some changes to their XI for this match as they brought in Harpreet Brar and Lockie Ferguson in place of Xavier Bartlett and Marco Jansen.Jitesh Sharma leads RCB in today’s match in the absence of full-time captain Rajat Patidar.Punjab Kings’ campaign this season has also witnessed sharp fluctuations in form.
The team started IPL 2026 with a seven-match unbeaten run which included six wins and one losing match. However, five straight losses later in the season pushed their playoff hopes into jeopardy. However, Iyer’s rise as a captain has continued steadily in the Indian Premier League. From helping Delhi Capitals become a contender to leading KKR to the title and now trying to revive Punjab Kings’ campaign, he has built a strong record as a leader across teams. At the top of the list of all-time Indian Premier League captains remains Dhoni, who captained Chennai Super Kings and Racing Pune Supergiants in 235 matches between 2008 and 2025.
