During his two-day visit to the Netherlands, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Afsluytdijk Dam along with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Prime Minister Modi described the project as “pioneering” and hailed the water management structure as a “pioneering work”.

The Indian Prime Minister had earlier said that his visit to the Netherlands “added new momentum to Indo-Dutch relations.” This momentum was demonstrated when Prime Minister Modi visited the historic dam. The visit drew attention to long-term water management and climate change resilience, while drawing critical parallels that could help infrastructure schemes back home.
What is Afsluytdik Dam? Why is it considered an engineering marvel?
• The 32-kilometre-long dam is primarily a key safeguard in the Dutch centuries-old battle against rising sea levels, separating the North Sea from the freshwater Lake IJsselmeer, according to a report by news agency ANI.
• While the dam protects the European Lowcountry, it also facilitates inland navigation, freshwater storage, and clean energy generation.
• According to the Directorate of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Rijkswaterstaat, separates the Wadden Sea from the IJsselmeer in the Netherlands and was largely built by hand.
• Completed in 1930, this structure protected the Netherlands from the sea, and was also used for road and water traffic as well as for recreational purposes.
– Aside from being a symbol of the Netherlands’ ongoing struggle against water and an international identification card for Dutch hydraulic engineering, it also has a military history, according to the Dutch Ministry.
• The dam is currently undergoing a massive modernization framework, Afsluitdijk 2.0, where it is upgraded and upgraded to be able to survive storms that could occur once every 10,000 years.
As part of the ongoing works, smart water drainage mechanisms, fish migration paths, advanced tidal energy and solar energy facilities are being constructed in the structure, according to ANI.
Direct link to Kalpasar Project in Gujarat
Prime Minister Modi said on Sunday that he inspected the main features of the project, thanking Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, who accompanied him. He noted that the features of the check dam, which effectively protected the Netherlands – a low-lying country – from catastrophic floods for decades, could serve as inspiration for such a model in India.
Afsluitdijk also helps with inland navigation, fresh water storage and clean energy generation, news agency ANI reported. In its press release, the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the direct engineering significance of the dam for the ambitious Kalpasar project in Gujarat, under which a freshwater reservoir and dam system has been proposed across the Gulf of Khambhat.
The Afsluitdijk project, which has served as a global standard in flood control and land reclamation to protect large parts of the Netherlands from the North Sea while enabling fresh water storage, could serve as a model for the Kalbasar project.
The project in Gujarat aims to create a freshwater reservoir, which would integrate tidal power generation, irrigation, and transportation infrastructure.
“In this regard, both sides welcomed the signing of the letter of intent between the Indian Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management for technical cooperation on the Kalpasar project,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.
