Italy: 8 injured after driver crashes car into pedestrians in ModenaModena Mayor Massimo Mizzetti said four people were seriously injured, and two victims were reported to be in critical condition.

The driver, described as a man in his 30s and an Italian national of North African descent from the Bergamo region, allegedly deliberately drove his car onto the pavement before crashing into a shop window.“It appears that the driver intentionally drove his car onto the sidewalk, hit several people and crashed into a shop window.

“Then he got out of his car and brandished a knife,” Metziti said.A man who tried to stop the driver suffered minor injuries during the accident. Witnesses told local media that they heard people falling and saw the car speeding toward pedestrians, and one witness claimed that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, although authorities have not officially confirmed this.Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her solidarity with the victims and their families in a post on the X website, describing the incident as “extremely serious.” Police continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.

She wrote: “I express my closeness to the injured and their families. I also extend my thanks to the citizens who courageously intervened to stop the perpetrator, and to the law enforcement agencies for their response.”
