Kulvinder Ram was convicted of a stabbing attack in London.
An Indian-origin man has been found guilty of a stabbing attack in east London that seriously injured a woman and two children last year. Kulvinder Ram, 48, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of attempted murder of the woman and child during the attack in Dagenham in October 2024.
He was also convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to another child who was injured in the incident, PTI reported.
The attack left the three victims seriously injured, requiring surgery. One of the victims remained in critical condition for several days after doctors feared he would not survive. The court heard that Ram was arrested at the scene by an off-duty Metropolitan Police Special Police officer as he was returning home from work.Special Police Sergeant Saif Sirukh said he initially thought he was witnessing a Halloween prank after he saw a woman and a child running down the street covered in blood.Soroukh said: “I quickly ran towards them and was immediately amazed by the extent of their injuries and the amount of blood.”“When I realized children were involved, I knew I had to act fast.”Soroukh told the court that he confronted Ram outside the property and arrested him even though he had no protective equipment or backup officers with him.
“I didn’t have any safety equipment, and I didn’t have colleagues to help them, but as a father and a police officer, it was natural for me to respond without hesitation, even without knowing the risks,” he said.“As I approached the residence, the suspect left the residence and I was able to place him on the ground with his hands behind his back.”He remained on the phone with emergency services while Rahm was detained until duty officers arrived. He added: “Most importantly, the victims survived and I am glad there is someone to help when needed.”Detective Constable Lewis Whitlock, who led the investigation, said officers had no doubt Rahm intended to kill the victims.“Our investigation left us in no doubt that Rahm intended to kill those he targeted, and we are pleased that the jury reached the same verdict,” Whitlock said.He also praised Sorokh’s actions, saying the off-duty officer likely prevented more deaths.“Without him, I have no doubt that Rahm would have continued to inflict potentially more fatal injuries,” Whitlock said. The trial heard that Rahm was suffering from undiagnosed schizophrenia and increasing paranoia at the time of the attack, believing he was being watched by cameras. However, the court found that he still understood his actions.Police said his behavior became increasingly erratic in the weeks leading up to the stabbing, including threatening to kill one of the victims.Ram remains in custody and will be sentenced at a later date.
