Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the Bengal government will initiate an administrative inquiry against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and two other officers in the RG Kar case, which involves a trainee doctor who was found dead on August 24 in the seminar hall of the state-run medical facility.

Investigation later revealed that the paramedic was raped and murdered by a civilian volunteer named Sanjay Roy.

The incident sparked widespread protests in the country, with doctors and healthcare professionals raising their demands for justice as well as measures to make the workplace safer for doctors.

What CM Suvendu said

The chief minister said the three officers were involved in “mishandling” the case, “offering money to the victim’s parents as bribe” and speaking at an “unauthorized press conference” in connection with the heinous crime that took place in August 2024, according to news agency PTI.

Adhikari explained that the state government was not involved in the actual investigation into the crime, which is being conducted by the CBI and discussed in court.

The newly sworn-in said the disciplinary proceedings and administrative investigation will be led by the state home secretary under the guidance of the chief secretary.

Meanwhile, the mother of RJ Kar’s victim and newly elected BJP MLA from Panihati Assembly constituency on Wednesday said that taking oath as a people’s representative marks the first crucial step in her fight for justice for her daughter, who was raped and murdered at her workplace on August 9, 2024.

Debnath said the crucial moment came when she visited the state secretariat Nabanna the previous day to attend a meeting of the elected MLAs with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, PTI reported.

“It reminded me of the police charges I faced last August when I was participating in the Nabanna Abhiyan under the previous regime. Ironically, this time, the Kolkata Police personnel guarding the Nabanna gates wanted to take selfies with me and escorted me inside,” she said.

She was among the 144 MPs who took oath on the first day of the swearing-in ceremony in the West Bengal Parliament on Wednesday.
