Drake is back with a bang, as the hip-hop star released not one, not two, but three albums on Friday in his first solo releases since his famous rap fallout with Kendrick Lamar two years ago.
Drake’s fans were already anticipating this Ice man for several months leading up to Friday’s release night, though during Thursday’s live stream, Drake revealed that he also had two other records he would be sharing as well, and later shared the artwork. Maid of honor and My dear on Instagram and drop them at midnight too.
To Drake’s credit, the overwhelming release strategy revolves around an ambitious move possible at the most pivotal moment of his career to date. The music world is closely watching how he progresses after Lamar’s feud ended in embarrassment, with “Not Like Us” becoming the biggest hit in the world.
His reputation has taken a hit in the rap world — exacerbated by his much-criticized decision to sue Universal Music Group (his record label and Lamar) for releasing “Not Like Us” at all — even though 6 God remains one of the biggest acts on the planet, and Ice man It was one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The release night turned out to be much bigger than anyone initially expected, as Drake fans now have 43 songs and 149 minutes of new music to listen to.
Artists featured on all three albums include Sexy Red, PartyNextDoor and, most notably, Future, the latter of whom in 2024 released the Metro Boomin/Kendrick Lamar single “Like That,” which helped ignite the subsequent Lamar/Drake feud that year.
With surprise Maid of honor and My dearDrake turned what was already highly anticipated new music on Friday into a major event in itself. Now with three albums out, the question becomes which record will go to number one, and how many charts it will dominate in the coming weeks.
