State-run oil marketing companies on Friday increased petrol and diesel prices by $3 per litre, days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to adopt austerity measures to conserve foreign exchange by reducing imports of crude oil and precious metals.
The retail price of petrol in Delhi has now increased from $94.77 per litre $97.77 per liter, while diesel prices rose from $87.67 per litre $90.67 per litre.

However, the increase varied between cities due to differences in local fees. As per the revised rates, petrol in Kolkata is now more expensive $108.74 per liter, an increase of $3.29 per litre, while in Mumbai it rose to $106.68 per liter, an increase $3.14. In Chennai, petrol prices rose $2.83 L $A company executive said: 103.67 per litre.

Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had earlier indicated that a price adjustment was possible. Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event in the national capital on Tuesday, Puri said the government will eventually have to take up the call to increase prices of petroleum products like petrol and diesel.
His remarks came after Prime Minister Modi’s appeal on Sunday urging people to conserve energy and foreign exchange, a message he reiterated on Monday.
