Donning the garb of a lawyer, Mamata Banerjee made her way through loud sloganeering at the Calcutta High Court on Thursday as a former chief minister pleaded a case related to alleged widespread post-poll violence across West Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee, whose Trinamool Congress (TMC) party recently lost the West Bengal elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), faced heavy slogans in the Calcutta High Court, where she appeared arguing the case seeking measures against the post-poll violence in the state.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) later sought a report from its West Bengal wing on Mamata Banerjee’s registration and practice status after she appeared in the HC, news agency PTI reported. The BCI has asked the West Bengal Bar Association to submit a report within two days with details if Mamata Banerjee sought suspension of her lawyer’s license when she was chief minister.
Mamata Banerjee personally arrived at the Calcutta High Court today to plead a matter related to the large-scale post-poll violence unleashed by the BJP across Bengal, the TMC said in a post on X, adding that she has for once shown what truly sets her apart.
“She never abandons the people of Bengal in their hour of need. She never stops fighting for truth, justice and constitutional values. Time and time again, she rises above the politics of hate with unparalleled compassion, courage and conviction,” Mamata Banerjee’s party said.
Whether confronting the injustice of SIR or standing firm against the unruly behavior of the BJP, she continues to prove that there is truly no leader like her in the country today, he added.
During the hearing, Mamata Banerjee reportedly showed some pictures. He even argued that “even children and women were not spared.” She handed over a list of the names of ten people allegedly killed.
She called for immediate protection for the people, saying that homes and offices were being seized and looted in front of the police. I have already provided the pictures
“My humble submission is to protect the people of Bengal. This is not a bulldozer country,” she said.
She claimed in court that everything is done in the presence of the police, adding that people have the right to be heard even if you are demolishing an unauthorized building.
Banerjee said criminals are taking the law into their own hands and called on the police to intensify and prevent crime. “After something happens, they won’t investigate? There are no police,” Banerjee said.
As Mamata Banerjee arrived at the Calcutta High Court, BJP spokesperson NV Subhash said the Trinamool Congress was “unable to absorb the defeat”.
The BJP ended the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state by winning an unprecedented 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly elections.
“The elections in West Bengal are over; the people have delivered a landslide victory to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Prime Minister has taken oath… along with his Cabinet colleagues, and there is a peaceful atmosphere in West Bengal. But the TMC thought they would rule again… She (Mamta Banerjee) is unable to digest the defeat,” Subhash said.
It is not a small defeat, it is huge, he said, adding that she lost her Assembly seat – Bhabanipur.
“She has now come to court wearing a black dress as a lawyer, and this is a free country. Anyone can come, anyone can talk about it… she can come and argue,” Subhash said.
He added that there is a law in this country, and the law will take its own course.
