External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made the remarks at the opening session of the conclave of BRICS countries attended by foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, Brazil and several other member states of the bloc here.

This meeting has gained its importance because it is being held amid growing global concerns about the economic repercussions of the West Asian crisis, especially the massive interruptions in energy supplies resulting from the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.

“We are meeting at a time of great change in international relations,” Jaishankar said in his televised opening remarks at the two-day conclave in New Delhi.

“Ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainties, and challenges in trade, technology and climate are shaping the global landscape,” he said.

Jaishankar said that there are growing expectations, especially from emerging markets and developing countries, for BRICS to play a constructive and stabilizing role to overcome current challenges.

Against this background, our discussions today represent an opportunity to reflect on global and regional developments, and to consider practical ways to enhance our cooperation.

Development issues remain central. He added that many countries still face challenges in the areas of energy, food, fertilizers and health security, as well as access to finance.

“BRICS can help them respond more effectively. Economic resilience is also key. Reliable supply chains and diverse markets are its essential components. We must focus on both,” Jaishankar added.

The Foreign Affairs Minister noted that peace and security remain “central” to the global order.

He added, “The recent conflicts only underscore the importance of dialogue and diplomacy. There is also a deep common interest in strengthening cooperation against terrorism.”
