CM Vijay will face a floor test amid the AIADMK rift
Meanwhile, after taking oath and forming the government in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and his Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam party are set to face a stiff test today in the Assembly. Vijay will have to prove his majority in the Assembly through a vote of confidence, as he formed the government with the support of small parties, barely getting a majority.
However, Vijay’s ground test may also become a stage to expand the AIADMK’s internal leverage, after a faction of the party decided to support Vijay, claiming that they have a majority of MLAs in the party on their side.
The rebel faction of the AIADMK, led by senior leaders CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani, claims to have around 30 of the 47 MLAs affiliated with the party.
However, the party’s Rajya Sabha MP ES Enpadurai said on Tuesday that any MLA acting against the official whip would face disqualification under the anti-defection law.
