The accident occurred on Mahabubnagar bypass road after midnight on Sunday when the car was making a U-turn and a Hayabusa bike hit it from behind, police said.

The fatal accident reportedly occurred on Balakonda bypass road in Mahabubnagar district.

Of the five dead, two were riding the Hayabusa bike, while the other three were in the car. Police said the victims who were driving the car were seriously injured and were taken to hospital where they died during treatment.

Rural police in Mahabubnagar said they had not yet received a formal complaint about the incident, which occurred around 1 a.m., the Times Of India reported.

The deceased family members traveling in the car were identified as Arshia Begum (30), Ojiba (7) and two-year-old Amar.

One of the riders has been identified as Yaqub Afzal, 25, a resident of Hyderabad, while the identity of the other has not been confirmed.

While the investigation is still ongoing, reports state that bike racing may have been the cause of the fatal collision. NDTV reported that the two young men were riding the bike at a speed of approximately 140 kilometers per hour when they lost control and collided with a car.

Locals were quoted as saying that young people regularly use the bypass road for horse racing at night and regularly perform bike and speed stunts on sports bikes. They claimed that the authorities failed to act despite repeated complaints.

“Every night, these young men race on the bypass road with loud sports bikes. They drive dangerously and endanger innocent lives. We have complained several times, but no one listens,” locals were quoted as saying, adding that the police should increase patrolling, install surveillance cameras and conduct special drives against reckless driving, among other things.
