Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed people on National Technology Day – which commemorates the momentous events of May 11, 1998, when India conducted successful nuclear tests at Pokhran in Rajasthan – and said technology has become a key pillar in building a self-reliant India.
Modi said the historic moment in 1998 reflected India’s scientific superiority and unwavering commitment.
“Congratulations on National Technology Day. We remember with pride the hard work and dedication of our scientists, which led to the successful tests at Pokhran in 1998,” he said on social media platform X.
The Prime Minister said that technology has become a key pillar in building a self-reliant India and is accelerating innovation, expanding opportunities and contributing to the country’s growth across sectors.
He said: “Our continued focus remains on empowering talent, encouraging research, and finding solutions that serve national progress and the aspirations of our people.”
On this day in 1998, Modi said that the nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran introduced the world to India’s remarkable capabilities.
“Our scholars are the true architects of the nation’s pride and self-respect,” he said.
India conducted five nuclear tests of advanced weapons designs on May 11 and 13, 1998 in the Pokhran region in the Rajasthan desert.
The first three explosions occurred simultaneously at 15.45 Indian time on 11 May.
