Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin and legislator from Tamil Nadu’s Chipauk-Thiruvilikini constituency was elected as the leader of the legislative party on Sunday.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s legislative council led by party president M K Stalin at Anna Arivalayam, the party’s headquarters in Chennai, a party statement said.
Former DMK minister KN Nehru has been elected deputy leader and another veteran leader of the party, Yves Velu, who was also a minister in the MK Stalin-led government, has been appointed as the ‘whip’, the statement said.

“It’s officially (TVK president) Vijay versus Udhay (in the Assembly). As I expected, Udhay will find this role very difficult,” said veteran journalist Radhakrishnan RK.
“Without the experience of sitting on the opposition benches like KN Nehru or EV Velu, Udhay will find it difficult to negotiate on this turf. If he performs well, he will earn people’s respect,” he added.
In the assembly elections held on April 23, Udhayanidhi Stalin contested from the Chibok-Thiruvilekkini Assembly seat for the second time in a row and secured 62,992 votes. He defeated Tamilaga candidate Vettri Kazhagam D Selvam by a margin of 7,140 votes.
