India beat China to win the gold medal

The Indian women’s reverse shooting team made a sensational comeback to win the gold medal in the second round of the Shooting World Cup in Shanghai on Sunday. The trio of Dipika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and 17-year-old Kumkum Mohammed beat hosts China 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout after the match ended in a 4-4 draw across four sets.The win was special for India as the team had earlier beaten powerhouse South Korea – 10-time Olympic champions – in the semi-finals. It was also Team India’s first women’s World Cup gold medal since 2021 and their first medal in the category in three years.

Dipika, India’s most experienced archer, played a key role throughout the competition. Traveling without a full-time national coach, the senior archer was constantly mentoring and motivating her younger teammates during crucial moments.India started strong and won the opening set 54-53, with Deepika scoring consecutive 10s to give the team confidence. But China responded quickly. In the second set, India faltered as Kumkum managed just 8 and Dipika surprisingly fired 7 in the final dart as China leveled the match 2-2.Then the home team took the lead 4-2 after a review that raised China’s last share from 8 to 9 in the third set.India looked close to defeat in the fourth set despite Deepika regaining form with two perfect tens.

China needed just one final nine to win the title in front of their home crowd.But the young Chinese archer Yu Qi shot 8 under pressure, giving India a lifeline and forcing them to fire.India held their nerve brilliantly in the decider. Ankita opened with a 9, Kumkum followed with a brilliant 10, and Deepika calmly fired a 9 when only 8 was needed to secure the gold.
