However, Stalin lashed out at the Congress for what he said was its severing of ties with the DMK and the party MLAs not meeting after the results.

“Though the Secular Progressive Alliance, led by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, did not get the majority seats required to form the government, we got a large number of votes. I had stated that we would not obstruct the formation of a new government and that the KDP would work as a constructive opposition party,” Stalin said.

The DMK leader welcomed the alliance partners’ move to support Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, while remaining ideologically aligned with the DMK.

“The Congress members who contested and won as part of our alliance did not come to Anna Arivalayam to express their gratitude. In a single day, the Congress party severed its ties with the DMK and walked away,” he said.

“At the same time, communist leaders Comrade Shanmugam and Comrade Veerapandian, as well as Viduthalai Chiruthaigal leader Katchi Thirumavalavan, have announced that they will continue to cooperate with the DMK in the struggle for the rights of Tamil Nadu and the welfare of the people. Their expression of solidarity shows the trust they place in the ideologically strong DMK,” he added.

The Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), VCK, Congress and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) extended support to TVK to form the government. Vijay’s party now has the numbers required to form the government in the state.

The DMK’s open resentment against the Congress has left the future of India’s alliance in question, as the two parties remain key allies at the Centre.
