Given the prevailing uncertainty in forming the government, especially with TVK lacking a simple majority to form the government on its own, and no other political party coming close to the magic number of 118 seats, it was imperative to support TVK in its efforts to form the government, Thirumavalavan said.

A few hours after handing over the letter of support to TVK general secretary Aadhav Arjuna, Viduthalai founder Chiruthaigal Katchi said his party’s decision, as mentioned earlier, was in sync with that of the Left parties.

“Our relations with the DMK will not be affected due to our stance, but it will help Vijay form the government and also prevent President’s rule in the state,” Thirumavalavan told a packed press conference.

He added that he continued with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.

He said his party’s stand has already been conveyed to DMK president MK Stalin, who approved the unanimous decision of the VCK and the Left parties.

“We exercised our freedom as a political party and also took into account the long-term vision of the state and gave unconditional support to TVK,” the VCK leader said.

CPI state minister M Veerapandian, who was present on the occasion, said the governor should abide by the rules and help form the TVK government soon.

“The governor must respect the constitution, respect the rule of the people and act in accordance with the law,” he said.
