The MV Hondius visited the world’s most remote island, Tristan de Cunha, and a passenger, a British citizen, was believed to be infected.
Amid the global scare over the Hantavirus, it has now emerged that a passenger on board the infected ship MV Hondius visited a school on the world’s remotest island, Tristan da Cunha, known colloquially as Tristan.
It is a group of remote volcanic islands in the South Atlantic Ocean and is now suspected of being infected with the new rat virus. It is one of the three constituent parts of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Tristan has a population of just over 200 and relies on ships from South Africa for food and fuel supplies, the MV Hondius being one of them. The MV Hondius stopped off the coast of Tristan da Cunha in mid-April, three days after its first passenger died from the hantavirus.
Since there are no airstrips, the only way to reach the island is by sea, with ships departing from Cape Town about 10 times a year. The British Health Security Agency has identified the man who visited the island as a new suspected case, and he is believed to remain on the island.According to a local blog from Tristan, when the cruise visited the island, locals boarded the ship and many passengers disembarked on shore. “Our last visit of the season was the MV Hondius, and even as we progressed into mid-April, the island continued to offer those perfect little weather windows.
“I arrived on the morning of Tuesday 14 April 2026, and sailed off North East Tristan while immigration formalities were dealt with,” the Tristan blog said. The infections on board the MV Hondios “are of great concern to the island,” Philip Kendall, Tristan da Cunha’s provincial director, said in a statement.
Emergency level 3 in the United States
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has activated its emergency operations centers and classified the Hantavirus outbreak as “Level 3,” the lowest emergency activation level that is typical of the situation. State health department officials in Texas, Arizona, Georgia, California and Virginia confirmed to The US Sun on Thursday that they were monitoring people who disembarked the ship. The Hanta virus is usually spread through contact with infected rodents, but the World Health Organization has confirmed that this strain, known as the Andes virus, can be transmitted between humans through close and prolonged contact.
