West Bengal Governor R N Ravi dissolved the state legislative assembly with effect from May 7. Based on the official notification issued in the Kolkata Gazette, the dissolution of the assembly comes after the term of the Trinamool Congress ends.

Earlier this week, the Bharatiya Janata Party won a landslide victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 seats. The outgoing TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, has been reduced to 80 seats.

“In exercise of the powers conferred on the Governor under Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, the Hon’ble Governor of the State of West Bengal, Shri R. N. Ravi has issued an order dissolving the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal with effect from May 7, 2026,” the official statement issued by the Lok Bhavan in Bengal said.

Mamata says ‘will not resign’

Days before this dissolution, the TMC leader had stated that she would not resign from her post, as she alleged that the mandate was rigged in favor of the BJP.

“There is no doubt about my resignation. We were defeated not by public mandate but by conspiracy,” Mamata said during her press conference earlier this week.

This is a developing story.
