A cleric who participated in talks with the Pakistani Taliban was shot dead

Two bike-riding gunmen killed Maulana Muhammad Idris, a prominent cleric of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl who participated in peace talks with the Pakistani insurgent group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday. Rajshekar Jha reports.The Islamic State in Khorasan Province claimed responsibility for the killing, which came amid a wave of assassinations of JUI-F figures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Idris, a former regional lawmaker from Charsadda, was shot dead on his way to Darul Uloom Utmanzai. The murder also highlighted previous disputes between the cleric and Field Marshal Assem Mounir.
