In a dramatic political setback for the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), the results of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections have dealt a devastating blow to the party’s leadership, with a majority of its ministers losing their seats – including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Of the 35 ministers who participated in the elections, as many as 22 were defeated, representing a staggering 63% loss within the Cabinet. The scale of the defeats indicates what observers describe as a structural rejection of the ruling leadership by voters across the state.

The losses included key governance sectors. This widespread electoral setback indicates dissatisfaction not only with the individual candidates, but also with the government’s performance as a whole.

Among the most famous defeats was that of Mamata Banerjee herself, who lost from Bhabanipur. Senior leaders including Arup Biswas (Tollygunge), Bratya Basu (Dum Dum), Chandrima Bhattacharya (Dum Dum Uttar) and Shashi Banga (Shyampukur) were also sacked.

Several defeats came by large margins. Shashi Banga, Minister of Industry, Women and Child Development, Shyampukur lost to BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty by a majority of over 14,600 votes. Former minister Nirmal Majhi was defeated in Joghat by BJP’s Prasanta Digar by a margin of over 49,500 votes.

North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha Deenhata lost by more than 17,400 votes to the BJP’s Ajay Rai. Siddiqullah Chowdhury, a senior TMC leader and a prominent minority figure, was defeated in Monteswar by the BJP’s Saikat Banga by over 14,700 votes.

West Bengal Cooperation Minister Pradeep Majumdar lost the Durgapur Purba seat by a margin of over 30,900 votes against BJP’s Chandrasekhar Banerjee, while Environment Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya was defeated in Dum Dum Uttar by BJP’s Sourav Sikdar by over 26,400 votes.

The scale and spread of these defeats indicate a decisive shift in voter sentiment in West Bengal. Rather than an isolated fight against incumbency against individual leaders, the findings indicate a broader rejection of the TMC’s governance framework and its senior leadership.

With much of its government defeated electorally, the TMC now faces a major challenge in rebuilding its political credibility and leadership structure in the state.
