Tamil Nadu on Monday witnessed history as mega film star ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay made a stunning foray into electoral politics. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party in the state and weakened the long-standing dominance of the AIADMK and DMK. While Vijay’s TVK party won 108 seats in the state, it failed to reach the majority mark of 118 seats, making it a strong contender but not a clear ruler. The DMK won 59 seats, the AIADMK won 47 seats, and the Congress won five seats.

It remains to be seen what comes next for Vijay after he missed the magic majority number. However, his father and filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar pointed out that Vijay’s boldness as a leader lies in the fact that he stands alone “without alliance”.

What Vijay’s father said

Alliance uproar in Tamil Nadu

Now that it is clear that TVK cannot form a government on its own, it may look to secure support from smaller parties or potential allies. Hindustan Times reported on Monday that TVK had approached Congress to forge an alliance before the elections. The report said that a section of the Congress wanted a pre-poll alliance with TVK and could still support Vijay with its five members.
