V D Sathisan is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) and the current Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He is one of the most prominent faces of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala politics, having represented the Paravur constituency for multiple consecutive terms since 2001. Known for his acerbic debating style and strong legislative presence, he plays a key role in shaping the opposition’s strategy in the state.

After 17 rounds of vote counting, the Election Commission announced that Sathisan would retain his seat with a margin of more than 20,000 votes. He polled 78,658 votes while his nearest rival, E T Tyson of the Communist Party of India, polled 58,058 votes.

Early Life of VD Satheesan

VD Satheesan was born on 31 May 1964 in Nettur, Ernakulam District, Kerala. He obtained his LLB from Kerala Law Academy Law School and later LLM from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. Before joining politics full-time, he practiced as a lawyer in the Kerala High Court for about a decade.

He was active in student politics early on, serving as president of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union and assuming leadership roles in student organizations associated with the Congress Party. His early exposure to student movements shaped his entry into mainstream politics.

About Paravur Circle:

Paravur is a legislative assembly constituency in Ernakulam district of Kerala state. It is a peri-urban coastal district with a mix of fishing communities, service sector workers and urban residents.

The seat is politically important in central Kerala and is traditionally affected by the UDF-LDF rivalry. Key local issues include coastal livelihood concerns, infrastructure development, employment, and urban civic services. Satheesan has represented this constituency continuously since 2001.

Political record of VD Satheesan

VD Satheesan first contested from the Paravur seat in 1996 but lost. He was first elected in 2001 from Paravur, and has since won the seat in 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021, registering five consecutive victories.

He served as the chief whip of the Congress in the Kerala Assembly during earlier terms and became widely known for his active participation in legislative debates on governance and public policy.

In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, Paravoor retained comfortably and was later appointed Leader of the Opposition by the Congress leadership, marking a significant rise in his political role at the state level.

In the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, he is once again contesting from Paravur as the main candidate of the United Democratic Front, with the Left Democratic Front fielding E T Tyson (Tyson Master) as his main opponent in a closely watched contest.
