Why was Karur the center of the storm last year?

The constituency attracted national attention last year after a deadly stampede during a rally by actor-politician Vijay.

The stampede occurred on September 27, 2025, in the Karur district of Tamil Nadu state, during a political rally organized by TVK. The event, which attracted a large crowd at the designated venue, turned into chaos, leading to the death of 41 people and the injury of dozens.

At least 39 people, including nine children, were killed and more than 50 others injured in a stampede during an election rally of actor and politician Vijay in Karur, about 400 km from Chennai, on Saturday.

Cops revealed that organizers requested a floor anticipating a crowd of around 10,000 people, but nearly three times that number arrived. The chief police officer added that the place lacked enough food and water for the crowd during the hours of waiting under the blazing sun.

What’s happening in the Tamil Nadu elections?

Vijay had recalled the Karur stampede incident while filing his nomination in April this year. He has alleged a conspiracy around the disruption of his latest film, the release of Jana Nayagan and Karur Stampede.

The DMK-Congress alliance, led by Prime Minister M K Stalin, aspired to retain power, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-BJP camp aimed to control the state.

A new twist has been added to the competition with the development of Vijay, who is vying for a brilliant debut.
