Saminthan served as the BJP’s Puducherry unit president three times, making him one of the key figures in the state-level party structure.
Saminathan belongs to the Singunthar community and has been politically active in Puducherry, particularly in Lauspet constituency.
In the 2016 Puducherry Legislative Assembly elections, he contested from Lawspet as a BJP candidate and secured 8,891 votes. He did not win the seat. Despite the loss, his candidacy contributed to the BJP’s voting presence and organizational visibility in the constituency.

What happened in the previous elections?
The Lospet constituency in Puducherry has shown a highly competitive and shifting electoral pattern over the years, with no single party able to maintain its dominance in the long term. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Mr Vaithyanathan of the Indian National Congress won the seat, continuing the Congress party’s recent influence in the constituency. Before this, in the 2016 elections, Congress vice president Sivakulundu emerged victorious, while BJP candidate V.K. Saminathan got 8891 votes but did not win. The 2011 elections saw a change in power when the seat was won by M. Vaithyanathan, who was then representing the All India NR Congress, reflecting a broader shift in Puducherry politics during that period. In previous sessions like 2006 and 2001, the constituency was held by MOHF Shahjahan of Congress, indicating a phase of Congress’ strength. Going back, he won the 1996 elections.
