Assam state election results live: The long wait since the polls were held in a single phase on April 9 is now over. The Election Commission began counting the votes. In a few hours, electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be opened across the state to decide the fate of 126 assembly constituencies in Assam. Assam exit poll forecast 2026

If we believe the opinion polls, the National Democratic Alliance is heading towards winning a historic third term in a row. Projections from major agencies like Axis My India and Today’s Chanakya point to a comfortable majority for the saffron alliance, with some polls predicting the BJP will win more than 100 seats.

Most opinion polls put the current government well above 80 seats, while the Congress Party-led ASOM alliance is expected to hover in the 25 to 35 seat range.

However, the Congress camp remains optimistic, banking on the recent surge in the tea belt and rural Nagaon district to defy expectations.

Leading Candidates and Key Seats in Assam Elections 2026

In Jalukbari, Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remains the center of gravity. In Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress party’s most prominent figure, is locked in a battle to restore his family’s legacy and secure victory in upper Assam.

Other high-stakes contests include Sivasagar, where Raijor Dal’s Akhil Gogoi is seeking to maintain a regional foothold, and Golaghat, where Finance Minister Ajanta Neog faces a test of her influence in the important tea-growing economic hub.

The state’s urban heart, Guwahati, offers its own set of dramas. In Guwahati Central, the elections turned into an intergenerational clash between the “old guard” and Gen Z. Veteran BJP leader Vijay Kumar Gupta is defending his urban stronghold against Kunki Chowdhury, 27, a first-time candidate for the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP). Chaudhry is a prominent contender, focusing on youth issues and civic reform to disrupt the existing political order.

The battle of Dispur, the administrative heart of Assam, is also being closely watched. The BJP has taken a high-risk gamble here by fielding Pradyut Bordoloi, a former Congress MLA who defected to the saffron party just before the elections. He is facing Congress’ Meera Borthakur Goswami.

The Election Commission deployed massive security forces to ensure a peaceful counting process. With female voter turnout reaching 85.96%, slightly exceeding male voters, the “silent voter” may ultimately hold the key to the final outcome. Whether Himanta Biswa Sarma gets a second term or the Gaurav Gogoi-led opposition pulls off a stunning upset, the ‘Gateway to North East’ trend for the next five years will be clear by the end of the day.

Sarma and Rineke Bhuyan Sharma Deni denied the allegations, calling them false and politically motivated, and said the matter would be resolved through legal action.

Following a complaint from Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the Assam Police registered a case of defamation and forgery against Khaira, leading to legal action and a search of his house.
