Twenty years after the original film, The Devil Wears Prada sequel was a huge hit in its first weekend in theaters. The Devil Wears Prada 2, which was largely led by women, has grossed $77 million in the United States and Canada, and $156.6 million internationally, according to studio estimates Sunday. The film cost $100 million to produce, which was a significant increase from the first film’s $35 million production budget.

Hollywood’s biggest global opening weekend

According to reports, the film’s global ticket sales have now reached an estimated US$233.6 million for the weekend, placing it second on the list of biggest opening weekends for Hollywood films. The fashion drama ranks second only to “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which grossed an estimated US$372.5 million.

Meanwhile, “Michael” took third place with $217 million, and “Project Hail Mary” came in fourth with $141 million.

About “The Devil Wears Prada 2”

Stars Streep, Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci have been on a global campaign for weeks, with glamorous stops in Tokyo, London and New York. Critics were a bit mixed about the sequel, which finds Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs once again working with Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly on the fictional Runway magazine in a severely depleted media landscape.

The first film opened in June 2006 and would go on to gross over US$326 million worldwide, not adjusted for inflation. And perhaps most importantly, she became part of the culture, thanks in part to her always-quoted aphorisms (“Girdle Your Loins,” “Pioneer,” “That’s It”). Legacy sequels are never a sure thing, but this time anticipation was high: According to Nielsen, streaming viewership for “The Devil Wears Prada” was up 428% from March 2026 to April 2026.It easily topped the box office and catapulted “Michael” to second place, although the musical biopic held up well in its second weekend, falling just 44%.

“Michael” earns $54 million in its second weekend

Second place went to Michael Jackson’s biopic, which grossed $54 million in its second weekend in North America, where it was shown on 3,955 screens. Its worldwide run already stands at US$423.9 million. Universal Pictures is handling the international release.

Summer movie season in Hollywood

This weekend marks the start of Hollywood’s summer movie season, a crucial 18-week stretch that runs through Labor Day and often accounts for about 40% of the annual box office. There are often blockbuster Marvel movies scheduled for the start of the season, but the combined strength of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “Michael” was no shabby alternative.

US box office sees US$2.8 billion growth

In fact, “Prada” alone did better business than last year’s summer Marvel movie, “Thunderbolts.”

There were several other new films in theaters this weekend as well, including the Adam Scott-directed horror film “Hokum,” the animated adaptation of “Animal Farm” from director Andy Serkis, and the Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley-led survival thriller “Deep Water.”They all opened behind “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which grossed $12.1 million in its fifth weekend, and “Project Hail Mary,” which grossed $8.6 million in its seventh weekend.

Neon’s “Hokum” topped the newcomers list with $6.4 million, rounding out the top five, followed by the not-so-well-reviewed “Animal Farm” with $3.4 million. “Deep Water” opened to $2.2 million. The annual box office is currently up approximately 14% from last year, with approximately $2.8 billion in domestic ticket sales to date.
