IMD issues red alert for severe thunderstorms, hailstorms in Delhi and possibility of rainfall

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Delhi early Monday, warning of severe thunderstorms and hailstorms. Some parts of the national capital have been placed under orange alert, with residents advised to prepare for possible weather conditions.

According to the real-time bulletin on the official IMD website, a red alert has been sounded in the entire Delhi except the south and southeastern districts.

Severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, dust storms and moderate rain were expected, with active winds reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour over the city.

While the IMD issued a yellow alert, it was later changed to a red alert.

The IMD said a ‘red’ alert has been issued for Outer North Delhi, North West Delhi, West Delhi, parts of North Delhi, Central Delhi, North East Delhi and Shahdara. South Delhi, south-east Delhi and parts of north Delhi remain under ‘orange’ alert status. Similar thunderstorm conditions are also likely to occur at isolated places across various locations in Delhi-NCR.

The Met Office warned of potential impacts, including broken branches of large trees, uprooting of weak or old trees, lightning strikes in vulnerable locations, such as tall trees and electricity poles, and disruption of municipal services.

The Meteorological Department advised residents to move to safe buildings, avoid weak structures, and stay away from windows during the storm.

On May 4, the IMD expects generally cloudy skies and light to light rain in some areas in the morning and evening. The Meteorological Department has forecast light to very light rain from May 3 to 5. Apart from this, there is also a possibility of another Western Disturbance on May 8.
