Heat wave unlikely over Delhi over next few days: IMD official

With rain hitting the capital on Saturday, and the current yellow alert for Sunday coupled with rain forecast for May 4 (Monday) is expected to bring a drop in temperatures. Due to the heavy rainfall, the period of relief from the heat will continue until next week.

As a result, Delhi may not witness a heatwave for the next few days, PTI reported, quoting an official at the Meteorological Department (IMD). “Delhi is unlikely to witness a heatwave over the next few days. Thunderstorm activity is expected to continue with rain and generally cloudy skies till May 6, followed by partly cloudy conditions till May 9,” the official said.

Light rainfall was recorded in some parts of Delhi on Saturday, with Safdarjung at 0.6 mm, Palam at 0.7 mm and Ridge at 0.6 mm, news agency PTI reported. Rainfall was recorded in Lodhi and Ayanagar road. The MeT department on Saturday issued a yellow alert for rainfall for central and northwest Delhi, along with an orange alert for parts of southwest and south Delhi at 9.55 pm, according to an earlier HT report.

Possibility of another western disturbance

The Meteorological Department has forecast light to very light rain from May 3 to 5. Apart from this, there is also a possibility of another Western Disturbance on May 8.

The maximum temperature on Saturday was 38.6 degrees Celsius and is expected to drop to 35-37 degrees Celsius by Monday, according to the IMD.

Regarding the upcoming western disturbance, Mahesh Palawat, Vice President, Skymet Weather, said: “It is already approaching the western Himalayas, which will lead to cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and Haryana. Due to this, rain, thunderstorms and dust storms will be seen over Punjab, Rajasthan, parts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, over the next two-three days, intermittently.” Palawat also said that he does not expect a heat wave due to this, adding that temperatures will also remain under control.
