“I will marry you only”: When Vijayta Pandit remembered Kumar Gaurav’s promise despite her engagement to Raj Kapoor’s daughter Reema

In Love Story, Vijayta Pandit and Kumar Gaurav play two conflicted lovers, and life imitates art. Vejaeta shared that during filming, their bond became stronger and soon it turned into a relationship.

After the huge success of the film, she turned down many film offers, choosing instead to focus on her personal life with Kumar Gaurav.

However, their love story did not have a fairytale ending. In her previous interview with Lehren Retro, Vijaeta revisited her much-talked-about relationship with Kumar Gaurav during the filming of Love Story, and revealed how their romance blossomed off-screen even as familial opposition mounted.

“We fell in love…and everyone can see it.”

Speaking about his time on set, Vegeta said that their relationship became clear very quickly.“We were shooting together…and we fell in love. Rajendra Kumar was feeling it and was very against it,” she said. She remembered how direct and often terrifying his rejection was.“He would get very angry… and say, ‘If you fall in love at this point, what will happen to your career? I will find you a solid girl.'” “I was hearing all this and feeling very scared,” she admitted.

Despite the pressure, their relationship continued.“We fell in love… and the heart doesn’t listen. He was my first love,” Vegeta said, emphasizing how deeply emotional she was affected. While the film was a huge success, their personal lives became complicated.

Engagement shock: “Such a big diamond ring…”

Halfway through, Kumar Gaurav got engaged to Reema Kapoor, Raj Kapoor’s daughter.Vegeta revealed that she attended the engagement.“I went happily,” she recalls. “But when I saw that big diamond ring, I said it was beautiful, and he got angry and said, ‘If you like it, throw it away!’”She added that even those around them can feel the depth of their relationship.“Rena Roy told my sister that there is a lot of love between them,” she said.

“I’m engaged…but I’m going to marry Vegeta.”

Even after the engagement, Kumar Gaurav allegedly continued to meet her.“My mother asked him: ‘You’re engaged, why did you come here?’ He said: Yes, I am engaged, but I will marry Vegeta. She also claimed that he even swore on her mother’s prayer beads.“If I get married, I’ll marry Vegeta, otherwise I won’t get married at all… That’s a fact,” she said.

Family tensions and their repercussions

However, things did not go well. Vegeta maintained that she had no role in his broken engagement. Kumar Gaurav later married Namrata Dutt. His father, Rajendra Kumar, who had a close relationship with Sunil Dutt and Nargis after working together in the film Mother India, was keen for his son to marry into a prominent film family.Vejaeta also claimed that the relationship affected her career.“Rajendra Kumar kept me away from films… Producers would say that our duo was a hit, but he would insist that films happen because of the hero,” she claimed.

Life after a love story

While the duo never recreated their successful romance together, Vegeta later moved on and later married the music composer

Adesh Shrivastava

.She also belongs to a famous music family, as she is the sister of the composer duo Jatin Lalit, known for their popular albums like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.

“People wanted to see us together again.”

Looking back, Vegeta believes fans wanted to see them reunite on screen.“If we kept working together…people wanted to see us again. That longing is still there,” she said, describing the chapter as “gone” — but one that still resonates with fans.
