Parts of Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region witnessed rain accompanied by thunderstorms and winds late on Saturday, bringing relief to the scorching heat.

The heavy rains come as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Delhi and the adjoining district, including Bahadurgarh, Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar and Ballabgarh, during the next two hours.
Earlier in the day, Delhi witnessed an increase in maximum and minimum temperatures. While the minimum temperature was recorded at 25.9 degrees Celsius in Safdarjung, the maximum temperature was 38.6 degrees Celsius.
The new rise in mercury came after two days of moderate rain that brought down the temperature. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the next two days, warning residents of possible rain and thunderstorms.
“Light to light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 30-40 km per hour, gusting to 50 km per hour, is likely on Sunday,” an IMD official told news agency PTI. Similar conditions are likely to continue on Monday.
“A fresh western disturbance is expected to impact the region in the coming days, causing cyclones to circulate over nearby areas. Light rain may fall in parts of the city over the next few days, and there is no possibility of a heatwave at least in the next week,” said Mahesh Palawat, Vice President, Skymet.
Rains also fell in parts of Himachal and Uttarakhand on Saturday, while Dehradun witnessed a hailstorm accompanying the rains.
