Lionsgate’s upcoming reimagining of The Blair Witch Project Evoking her previous creative voices.
Dylan Clarke is set to helm a new horror film from a script by Chris Thomas Devlin that the director is rewriting. In addition, Hollywood Reporter I’ve learned that Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, who starred in the original 1999 found footage film, are set to serve as executive producers, as is the first film’s directing team of Eduardo Sanchez, Daniel Myrick, and Greg Hill.
In 2024, Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced at CinemaCon a new landmark version of The Blair Witch Project It was in the works through the companies’ multi-film deal that sees Blumhouse reimagining Lionsgate’s horror classic. Speaking at CinemaCon, Lionsgate Films Director Adam Fogelson teased, “A new vision for Blair Witch It will reintroduce this classic horror film to a new generation.
Shortly after the CinemaCon screening, Leonard — who starred with Williams and Heather Donahue in the original film — took to Instagram to express his frustration over his film crew’s lack of involvement in the new film. Additionally, no one from the first film worked in any significant way in the 2000 sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2Or follow 2016.
Leonard wrote that there had been “25 years of disrespect on the part of the people who have taken the lion’s share (pun intended) of the profits from our business, and it looks bad and classless.”
said Ben Rock, who served as the film’s 1999 production designer THR At the time he wasn’t happy about the original team not being involved: “None of the sequels connected with fans the way they wanted them to. So it might be helpful to at least talk to some of the original creators.”
This new development signals the unity between the original team and the updated vision, bringing together the entire mythology and heritage of the property for the current generation.
The Blair Witch Project It was produced for a princely sum of $35,000 (before marketing costs) and became an instant sensation when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 1999. Artisan Entertainment purchased the independent film and released it theatrically in June of that year, with the story centering on three film students who disappear in the woods after setting out to film a documentary about the Blair Witch. The film grossed $248 million at the global box office ($492 million today), and was a summer phenomenon and one of the 10 highest-grossing titles of the year, not to mention one of the most profitable films of all time.
Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum will serve as producers of the reboot alongside Roy Lee. Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath also produce for Divide/Conquer.
