How a social media post helped cops arrest four for allegedly sexually harassing women on an Agra bus

Four people were arrested in Agra, Uttar Pradesh state, on charges of molesting a woman and a minor girl inside a moving bus on Monday. The social media alert helped the police act quickly, officials said, according to news agency PTI.

Police received the information at 12:27 a.m. on April 27. The bus was traveling from Kanpur to Ahmedabad and was approaching Namner crossing in Agra.

The police said that the alert was picked up by them Social Media Monitoring Team, who immediately informed Rakabganj Police Station.

Following the alert, police teams carried out intensive searches at the Namner crossing and intercepted the bus upon its arrival at the location. The statement added that the four defendants were immediately arrested and legal measures were taken against them.

Last year, Raipur police had registered an FIR over the ongoing online harassment of a social activist and his family on X.

The complaint was filed by Kunal Shukla, a resident of Raipur. He alleged that a man from Dhamtari district had been posting abusive and degrading content against him, his wife and daughter for over a year using a fake profile called ‘Kathiawadi’.

The accused also issued threats, causing mental distress and worry for the safety of his 11-year-old daughter, Shukla said. He later contacted senior police officials after the harassment continued.

The police verified the complaint and found it to be true. The FIR was registered under Section 296 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The accused has been identified as Nilesh Raichura.

In 2022, Delhi Police arrested a man for allegedly harassing more than 150 women through fake social media accounts and virtual WhatsApp numbers.

The accused, Sachin Kumar (now 34), allegedly created fake Instagram profiles and used virtual numbers to contact women through the apps. It then sends them requests and messages to build the connection. He also transferred obscene images of women and used them to blackmail them into having physical relations, police said.

He targeted women whose mobile numbers he obtained through friendship apps and social platforms. The accused, who dropped out of school and worked as a worker, was later arrested.
