US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States has no “closer friends” than Britain, as he welcomed King Charles III to the White House for a state visit overshadowed by tensions over the Iran war.In a speech he delivered during a pomp-filled reception, at which a 21-gun salute was fired, Trump’s tone was a far cry from recent criticism targeting the British government for its failure to join the conflict with Tehran.

“In the centuries since we gained our independence, Americans have never had closer friends than the British,” Trump said. Using a phrase that British governments have appreciated since it was first used by Winston Churchill after World War II, Trump said the two countries have a “special relationship, and we hope it will always remain that way.”Trump also praised the British military, saying that “no one has fought better together” with the United States – although he recently mocked Britain’s two aircraft carriers as “toys.”
