As West Bengal votes in the second phase of polls on Wednesday, April 29, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien posed a major challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to “resign” if Mamata Banerjee and the TMC win in the state.
“Narendra, you have declared yourself the candidate for all 294 seats in Bengal. Stop making big talk. Accept this challenge. On May 4, when Mamata Banerjee and TMC won Bengal, he resigned as chief minister,” Derek says in a video he shared.
“Do you have the courage?” He added.
The state will vote on 142 seats on Wednesday, April 29, most of which are Trinamul strongholds and affected by the Special Intensive Review (SIR) exercise.
About 32.1 million voters will cast their votes today in 142 electoral districts in seven regions to determine the fate of 1,448 candidates.
The state’s opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been campaigning extensively in West Bengal ahead of the elections, with Prime Minister Modi holding 19 rallies since March 15 in a major boost for the party.
“They’re picking up all our kids.”
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is vying for another term in the ongoing elections, has leveled serious allegations against central forces deployed in West Bengal for the polls.
“They are not letting the 70th ward councilor go out. They are picking up all our boys,” Banerjee said.
“Several observers have come from abroad and are acting as per the directions of the BJP,” she claimed.
“People are supposed to vote, can voting be done this way?” I asked.
