In her cancer battle, Sonali Bendre says early detection could have changed everything: 'I didn't have to get to stage 4'

Actress Sonali Bendre, who was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer in 2018, spoke again about her journey and the lessons it brought. After undergoing extensive treatment in New York, including chemotherapy and surgery, she is stronger and continues to use her voice to raise awareness about the disease.Speaking about where she found the strength to fight, Sonali said, “I had a great support system, and that was my strength. I’m sure there are a lot of people who are transparent about this. I was more famous than them.” She also recalled how speaking publicly about her disease made her realize how little people discussed cancer publicly.

She highlighted the stigma that previously surrounded the disease, saying: “It was a taboo topic, and I didn’t realize that.

They were mentioning this as Disease C. They didn’t even name it.” Sonali emphasized how awareness and open conversations had disappeared when she needed them most.Reflecting on her diagnosis, the actress admitted that things could have been different if they had come to light in time. “What I realized is that for me, I didn’t have to go through stage 4,” she said. “If I had taken the test and caught the disease earlier, I wouldn’t have had the hardship that I did.”

She also stressed that cancer, when detected early, is treatable and “not a death sentence.”Sonali believes her public platform has helped move the much-needed conversation forward. “That’s what I realized: that when I’m in the public eye, maybe that’s what I can give back to. I can have a conversation about it,” she said, adding that the change in awareness over the past seven years has been significant. She expressed her satisfaction with the increased awareness, saying: “The way people talk about it now, and the way they are tested, was not like that before.

Which makes me happy; I feel like this is the only thing I’ve ever done.” She believes her journey has helped encourage more people to prioritize early detection.
