Watch: Trump and Melania host King Charles and Camilla in Washington displaying beehives in the White House garden

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump warmly welcomed Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the White House on Monday, as they began their four-day official visit to the United States. The first day of the visit began with an informal welcome at the White House. In mild Washington sunshine, Trump hosted the royal couple for tea and cake before taking them on a tour of the White House grounds, including the carefully maintained South Lawn where the beehives are located.Charles and Trump also exchanged handshakes and short remarks outside the South Concourse, marking a cordial start to the high-level trip, AFP reported.First Lady Melania Trump, wearing a yellow suit, greeted Charles and Camilla with kisses on both cheeks. Camilla completed the occasion with a brooch from Cartier featuring the British and American flags, studded with platinum, rubies, emeralds and diamonds.

Trump also showed the royal family a painting depicting the assassination attempt he survived in 2024, just days after the latest shooting at a party in Washington.

Later in the day, King Charles and Queen Camilla attended a garden party at the British Ambassador’s residence, where guests were served traditional refreshments such as cucumber sandwiches and scones. The meeting was also attended by a number of prominent figures, including Olympic diver Tom Daley and US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson. While public interactions appeared friendly, the visit comes at a sensitive time for US-UK relations.

Disagreements over the American position on Iran have caused tension in the so-called “special relationship” between the two countries.Despite the tensions, the visit is being positioned as a reaffirmation of historical ties. According to the White House, the goal is to “respect the long-standing and special relationship” between the two countries. On the second day of the trip, King Charles is expected to address a joint session of Congress, where he will highlight the enduring partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom.

In excerpts released ahead of the speech, he is set to describe the relationship as one of “reconciliation and renewal.”The royal couple, who earlier arrived at Joint Base Andrews for a ceremonial reception, have a packed itinerary. After the congressional address, they are scheduled to meet with Trump in the Oval Office before attending a state dinner at the White House.Later in the week, Charles and Camilla will travel to New York to visit the September 11 Memorial, before heading to Bermuda, in the first visit by the King to a British overseas territory since assuming the throne. The four-day visit aims to celebrate the long-standing relations between the United Kingdom and the United States, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence from the British Crown during the reign of King George III.
