Jimmy Kimmel faces backlash for 'widow' joke on Melania Trump amid incident at the White House

Melania Trump has criticized her host, Jimmy Kimmel, for making a controversial joke about her, calling his comments “hateful and violent,” and urging his network ABC to take action. The backlash comes after Kimmel, during a monologue last week, made a remark about the First Lady while previewing the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “Our First Lady Melania is here. Look at Melania, she is so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have the glow of a pregnant widow,” he said.

Days later, a shooting occurred at the same event in Washington, D.C., where a gunman opened fire near a security checkpoint. Authorities believe members of the Trump administration may have been the intended targets, with the exception of Kash Patel, according to the shooter’s 1,000-word statement.

Donald Trump and Melania were evacuated safely. In a post on X, Melania Trump condemned Kimmel’s comments and questioned why he was still given a platform.“Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric aims to divide our country. His monologue about my family is not comedy. His words are disturbing and deepen the political sickness within America,” she wrote.“People like Kimmel should not have the opportunity to enter our homes every evening to spread hate,” she added.

She also criticized ABC for giving Kimmel a platform, adding: “Kimmel is a coward, hiding behind ABC because he knows the network will continue covering it to protect him.”She added: “Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC leadership enable Kimmel’s outrageous behavior at the expense of our community.”The controversy intensified after the shooting, as a clip of Kimmel’s joke resurfaced, sparking backlash online.

Social media users accused the comedian of contributing to creating a toxic political climate, and some demanded that he be stopped from broadcasting.Kimmel has faced similar criticism in the past. He was briefly taken off the air last September following comments relating to the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, before returning a week later and admitting his comments may have been “ill-timed, unclear, or perhaps both”.In the wake of Saturday’s incident, Donald Trump described the event as a “somewhat traumatic experience” for his wife. The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen and has been taken into custody and is expected to appear in court. He was a teacher by profession.
